MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish Wellness Ministry is rooted in the mission of the church, which is to continue Christ's work of healing among all the people of God.

This ministry is to serve our Parish and community through the varied skills, gifts and experiences present in those who minister.

We respect the dignity of every human life and propose to promote healthy life style choices that enhance the integrity of mind, body and spirit.

WHAT IS A WELLNESS MINISTRY?

The Wellness Ministry focuses on healing and health. It encourages whole-person health through:
  • Body, mind, and spirit integration
  • Increased self knowledge
  • Personal responsibility
  • Interdependence among God's people
The Wellness Ministry is led by a committee of parish nurses who work together with the parish staff under the direction of the Pastor.

WHO PROVIDES THE SERVICES?

The Wellness Ministry includes nurses, physicians, social workers, other health professionals and parishioners who would like to volunteer to serve.

Volunteers are needed in many areas such as:

  • Assisting with screenings, health fairs, and other programs.
  • Speaking on health related topics.
  • Managing and organizing Wellness Ministry Development.

And

Service to individuals for example:

  • Providing transportation.
  • Running errands such as food shopping etc.
  • Making a regular friendly visit
  • Making a regular telephone call to the homebound.

WHAT CAN THE WELLNESS MINISTRY VOLUNTEER NURSES DO?

The nurses serve as:

Health Educators

  • Provide programs and screenings with a focus on maintaining wellness
  • Establish a resource library

Health Counselors

  • Provide limited, confidential health counseling

Health Referral Sources

  • Liaison to community resources
  • Referrals to health services

Integrators of Faith and Wellness

  • Promote an understanding of the relationship between faith and healing

WHAT THE WELLNESS MINISTRY VOLUNTEER NURSES DO NOT DO:

THE VOLUNTEER NURSES DO NOT

  • provide hands-on-nursing care
  • dispense medication
  • replace health care provider
  • provide emergency medical assistance
